Correspondence, 1766-1848.

This collection consists mainly of correspondence of three generations of the Goddard family. There are a few undated receipts and a list of shares in an unidentified estate. One item is a list of the letters in this collection. The correspondents include Patty Nichols Goddard and her cousins and friends; her three children and their friends; and her grandchildren, who wrote to their aunt, Grace Goddard Drury. Several letters were written to Patty Nichols Goddard before her marriage and concern family events and daily social activities. One letter, written by an unidentified man in 1772, concerns a party held at Patty Nichols' house and ther writer's courtship activities there. The letters written by Patty Nichols Goddard in later years were addressed to her children Nichols, Grace, and Nathan, and refer to family matters in Framingham, Mass., and Rutland, Vt. The correspondence of the second generation (i.e., Nichols, Grace, and Nathan) includes letters of Nichols to his sister concerning his efforts to establish himself in Rutland, Vt., his social activities there, and his marriage to Charity White. The correspondence of Grace Goddard Drurry includes letters exchanged with a friend concerning the merits of spinsterhood, 1800; a marriage proposal from an unidentified man; and letters from her sister-in-law, Charity White Goddard, and friends Abigail Baldwin Brewer ( - ) and Eunice Stone ( - ). Later, Grace Goddard Drury received several letters from her nieces and nephews (children of Nichols and Nathan Goddard), e.g., Harriet Martha Goddard (1804- ), concerning family matters, such as the death of Grace Drury's son Luke in 1828. A letter from her niece Grace Goddard (1806- ) concerns her work as a domestic servant in the home of a wealthy family in 1848.
